The effectiveness of total hip replacement/total knee replacement (THR/TKR) surgery in relieving pain and improving physical function has been well documented.

In addition to improved surgical techniques, the excellent performance of new implant materials and designs has substantially increased the demand for THR/TKR.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery:

Total knee replacement surgery offers great relief from pain in the damaged and arthritic knees; and it restores normal activities in life.

Knee replacement is a routine surgery performed on over 650,000 people worldwide each year. Over 95% of people who have had Total Knee Replacement experience an improvement in knee pain and function.

The total knee replacement surgery involves resurfacing the parts of the bones of the knee that have become degenerative and eroded. These are replaced by parts which are metal and plastic implants.

Using special, precision instruments, the surgeon removes the damaged surfaces of all three bones i.e. the upper end of tibia your shin bone; lower part of the femur your thigh bone and the under-surface of patella your kneecap. The replacement surfaces will then be fixed into place using bone cement.

Symptoms of advanced knee arthritis are pain, crepitus, stiffness, limping, muscle weakness, limitation of motion, and swelling. If you have knee deformities or severe X-ray changes, or advanced symptoms of arthritis, you may require a total knee replacement surgery. This is done after the non operative methods like medications; joint injections and other methods have not yielded the desired results, and the activities of the daily living are getting compromised.

The surface of the femur is replaced with a rounded metal component that comes very close to matching the curve of the natural bone. The surface of the tibia is replaced with a smooth plastic component which may be seated in a metal tray. The flat metal tray holds a smooth plastic piece made of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene plastic that serves as the articulating surface of the joint. The undersurface of the kneecap may also be replaced with an implant made of the same polyethylene plastic.
As the damaged and defunct surface of the joint articulating surface is removed and replaced with a metal plastic component of low friction; the pain due to this factor is completely removed and the patient can return to the PAINFREE daily activities.

Demand for joint replacements in young:
As the historical growth trajectory of joint replacement surgeries continues, demand for primary THA and TKA among patients less than 65 years old was projected to exceed 50% of THA and TKA patients of all ages by 2011 and 2016, respectively. The joint replacement surgeries add life to the years by negating the pain and allowing the person to function to the best of her/his abilities.

Cost of knee replacement depends upon the age, gender, implant & preferred accommodation.

Total Hip Replacement Surgery
There are many different causes of pain in the hip joint. These include primary osteoarthritis, or secondary arthritis due to fractures/ dislocations, rheumatoid arthritis; osteonecrosis (AVN) (restricted blood flow to the bone).

When the other therapies, such as pain medications; have failed, hip replacement are usually the answer. If you experience severe pain, loss of motion or deformity of your hip joint, unable to do your activities of daily living; and the non-operative methods have not yielded the desired results; you may require hip replacement surgery.

In a total hip replacement surgery, the painful parts of the damaged hip are replaced with artificial hip parts called prosthesis, a device that substitutes a joint. The prosthesis consists of steel components: a socket, ball, and stem. The outer shell of the socket is usually made of metal and the inner shell consists of plastic, metal or ceramic: or the entire socket may be plastic.

When the metal ball is joined with the socket, the new hip can allow for smooth, low friction movement. As the damaged part of the joint is removed the movement is now PAINFREE.

Cost of Hip replacement depends upon the age, gender, implant & preferred accommodation.

Arthroscopy
This minimally invasive one stitch procedure involves inserting a miniature scope or medical instrument through a tiny opening in the skin to examine and /or repair damaged tissue or bone.

The arthroscopic surgery can help to identify the damaged tissue present in the bones. The most common type of arthroscopic surgery include removal of loose debris, trimming of damaged cartilage, removal or repair of a torn meniscus, and ligament reconstruction.

It is technically possible to do an arthroscopic examination of almost every joint in the human body. The joints that are most commonly examined and treated by arthroscopy are the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, foot, and hip

The advantages of Arthroscopy are
  Day care procedure
Reduced morbidity as it a key hole procedure
  It provides immediate diagnostic information.
Less cost and reduced hospital stay
Early mobilization and return to work
  Medical attendance

Sancheti Joint Replacement Centre has state of the art Arthroscopy system. All the procedures are recorded and actual photographs taken during surgery are given to the patient. The Arthroscopy procedures are backed up by good rehabilitation which ensures speedy recovery of the patient.

Following procedures are done at Sancheti Joint Replacement Centre:
ACL reconstruction   Fixation of ACL avulsion
  Meniscal Surgery   Loose body removal
Micro fractures & ACI   Management of multiligament injuries
Adhesiolysis for stiff knee   Patellar realignment

One of the first shoulder units set up in India, the shoulder department at Sancheti Institute is a state-of the- art unit with an integrated world class shoulder rehab centre attached to it. The unit is equipped with the latest surgical equipment including the most modern radio frequency console.
